Dilana Rugs Workshop
The Dilana rug making workshop was established in Christchurch in 1981. At first the focus was on developing technical rug making skills and establishing a supply of quality materials from the local Romney wool industry. By 1985 Dilana consolidated its crafting methods down to just one hand-loomed rug type. From this technical basis, a strikingly diverse range of rugs is produced.
All rugs are developed from designs commissioned from established career artists, including painters, printmakers, ceramic artists, sculptors and installation artists.
Collaboration is integral to the success of the designs. Sometimes this collaboration is just between the artist and workshop, as unique and limited edition rugs are generated. Often for special commissions interior designers or architects may also be involved, ensuring the work integrates with particular interiors. |
